Greetings from geekgardener!

This post is very special for me and you all will know soon why it will be special to you all too. Most of you might be aware of the Kitchen Garden Day and the rest of you probably are surprised that there is one like that. I was excited when I came to know about it. I mean who wouldn’t. We have seen days earmarked for every single thing in the world and us gardeners deserve a day for ourselves. Don’t we?

Time for some facts now. Kitchen Garden Day was initiated by the Kitchen Gardeners International [http://kitchengardeners.org/] and since 2003, 4th Sunday of every August is celebrated as Kitchen Garden Day.  The happy guy with a trovel in one hand and a spoon in the other is the Mascot for KG Day. We know we have a day for us all. But what do we do on that day? Think of this day as Friendship day for gardeners. What do friends do? They meet up!

That is exactly what we are gonna do. Meet up and discuss about gardening, exchange ideas, get to know fellow gardeners from your area. I mean… the list is endless.

Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Give a short tour of your garden to your fellow gardening friends
  • Setup a garden for someone who wants to start off
  • If you have a green thumb, you can also educate others on gardening by conducting a small workshop.
  • Discuss about various ideas and challenges with your gardening friends etc.

I am planning to host a small meet up in my place and conduct an event that is probably first of its kind in Bangalore. Any guesses?

As part of the KG Day celebration, I am planning to conduct a Seed Swap event on that day. I always wanted to conduct one and what better day can I get? I will reveal more on this event in the coming days.

SeedSwapFull

For folks staying in different states, try and find out if there is a group near you that is conducting Kitchen Garden Day. If you can find out, great!. If not, no problem, you can start one.Open-mouthed smile. Be the change you are looking for!

I am very positive that forums in this site can be used to brainstorm and organize such events across the states. In our forums, we have people from almost all parts of India and that is a great thing. I will be posting a list of contacts from different states who are volunteering such meet up. Check the forum post linked below in this blog for more info.

You know what will be fun?  Send me the group pictures of the meet up and a write up of what you did and how it was. I will post it here.

I sincerely request you all to get together and make this event a grand success. Let us make kitchen gardening,  a number one Hobby.

My thanks to Preeti of Urban Leaves India for introducing KGI and KG day to me. If you are in Mumbai, it is very difficult to not know her. http://www.urbanleavesinindia.com/

Are you guys with me in this?

  1. idea is really great gg. But i dont think i can find some fellows at my place. As my knowledge is limited about kitchen gardening, and did not have a considerable crop, how can i encourage others for the same and that day.

  2. Thanks for this bit of news. With a bit of good luck I may actually be in Bangalore on this day. Looking forward to the celebrations.

  3. Hi,

I was also not aware about the Kitchen Garden Day until a couple of months ago. I liked the idea so much that I plan to celebrate it by have a fun filled experiential workshop at my residence in Rajeshwarinagar , Bangalore , where I’ll share my experience on growing vegetables and flowers. Interested participants can register by e-mailing me at xploreandxpress@gmail.com. Details ,timing and venue is posted on my blog

I’m looking forward to details of your “seed swap” event and would like to participate if it doesn’t clash with my event.

  7. hey GG! I was browsing through your posts and was simply amazed by your work especially container gardening since i know how challenging that is. until now i had been really envious of all you Bangalore people for having such wonderful opportunities that i hardly find in Mumbai. this all was until i read about Urban Leaves in your post and i’m very thankful to you for mentioning it. i checked out their site and am very happy to see such initiatives in Mumbai as well. i hope a lot of my gardening issues will be solved now and i’ll be able to grow better plants.
