Hi all,

I am a new member to this amazing group and also a very much new gardener from bangalore 🙂

I need some help with the rose plants that i have. One is regular and the other plant is a miniature variety. I dont know how to help them grow properly. Both of them flowered only once after that the plant is growing but no flowers. I dont have a clear idea about rose pruning or the required fertilizer. Please guide me as to how i can maintain my plants well.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to this very useful website. I am logging to this website after a very long time. Roses are heavy feeders, Every month at least twice you should enrich the soil due to leaching of soil. The composition of your soil should in the following ratio Red Soil:Compost:Cocopeat/Sand (1:1:1). For newly planted roses I would wait for a month before feeding it. You can choose either organic or inorganic way. Any day Organic is more safe and preferred method.

1) Organic :-  Oil cakes like Pongomia,Neem and gingly oil cakes are used. Soak all 3 cakes in a bucket of water taking equal quantities (Say 1 mug each of them for 10 litres of water). Allow the cakes to stand for up to  4 days. You will see frothing on the surface. Nothing to worry. It will be smelly too. Also add metacid say 10 ml so that it will kill the unwanted worms/Insect larvae. You can filter it and also use the solid particles for plants. Dilute the concentrate with water in the ratio of 1:10.

You can straightway pour the prepared solution in pots after light watering.

Even ground nut oil cakes and castor oil cakes are also good. The problem of using ground oil cakes is ants get attracted to the smell of ground nuts.

2) Inorganic :- In this method use readily prepared NPK 19:19:19 ( don't know the brand ),Sanjeevani  and Magnesium Sulphate ( or epsum salt ) , in the ratio 3 gms of (NPK), 1 ml of sanjeevani and 3 gms of Magnesium Sulphate  in 1 Litre of water.

For medium size pots (14 inches) you can use upto 250 ml of prepared solution. This method I have not tried.

You can even add DAP or complex to the above mix upto 3 gms. Make sure you use it in early morning or late in the evening since some plants will go into shock if the proper combination is not used.

Cakes are really very effective since use of inorganic chemicals increases PH value of soil

For pruning and general maintenance you will get lots of info on you tube or google it on net.

All the best to you.

Regards,

Raman
