Hi everyone,

I'm Lokesh from Chennai and am into Container gardening for a while. I should say that I accidentally took my wife's hobby (I'm a hobby hopper!! :D). She has been keeping roses for a few years and I suggested adding vegetable and organic waste to the mud directly. She did it and out came a tomato seedling and gave us 10 fruits. :). I'm hooked from then on.

We have now sowed a few okra, brinjal and pepper seedlings. They are coming off briskly.

I was taking a lot of ideas from this forum for a few months, and got the motivation to subscribe and write this post.

Thanks a lot GG for this wonderful forum.

Hi, newbie here. I googled to see where I could find potting soil in chennai and came across this. Where can I find good quality potting soil ?

My nursery person sold me red soil and it is so compacted in my pots. My plants didnt grow and then they all died :'(

I dont have access to ground and want to start some roses in pots. Can some one let me know name of the place and area where I could try? thanks. Also some kind of water soluble fertilizer . I cant use organic manure, I have very low immunity to infections and am slightly paranoid :/

Thanks, hope I start a nice green spot . Am starting with roses and if they work I plan to start some tomatoes. Lets see. Potting soil first.

I am from BANGALORE.  I will suggest one Kaialya Nursery in Anna Nagar, Shanti Colony in Chennai.  I have visited this nursery during my visit to Chennai and found it to be really very good.  Apart from seeds, saplings, they sell soil and soil mixes.  Their phone no. is 262711987/65516416.  One Ms Vijaya is running this nursery and her mob. No. is 9840750168.  My mob No. is 09986700475.  I have a Terrace garden for the past five years and grow flowers and vegetables.  Thanks.

Please have a look into Internet and search for R T Doshi who pioneered terrace gardening in Mumbai and has almost everything in his terrace including a short variety of coconut. He uses the following mix 50% of sugarcane baggase (which you can get free from sugarcane juice vendors), 25% with Compost or Manure (dried cow dung or goat manure) and remaining 25% with soil (you can prepare amrut mitti or good top soil under the trees)...You will be amazed that he got close to 1 ton of sugarcane harvest from his TERRACE...I think all our gardeners try to over engineer too many things with too many sprays and materials...Whereas the secret is simplicity and practicality...The more organic matter the potting mix with good food for micro organisms of the soil , the plants will thrive and produce in abundance..For preparing Amrut mitti you can check this http://www.urbanleaves.org

Thanks Nataraj , for the info. Unfortunately for urban gardeners space is a huge constraint. Even if we can acquire all the organic stuff required, storage becomes difficult. And preparing it . Easier option, despite being not the best option is to buy a ready made mix. I still haven't started my gardening project. 🙁 The link you provided is very informative. The enthusiasm I see for terrace gardening is infectious. One of my neighbours has a mango tree laden with fruits. XD
