Thank you,

I am a newbie myself in terrace balcony. You can simply start by seeing the sowing chart on this site which gives you and idea of what to start and when. Using plastic containers of 10-20 litres and a good planting soil mix, you can grow almost anything. It also depends how much space and sunlight you have. Gourds, cucumbers etc will need a trellis to grow. Tomatoes will need a cage and are a bit fussy to start with. Best options are capsicum, chillies, lettuce, radishes. If you have good space, gourds are easy to grow and very productive.
There are innumerable resources on the web; just google. The blog on this site is very informative with perspective of growing in Indian conditions.
All the best.
