I bought an expensive bouganvilla plant last year from Lalbagh nursery. This is not a regular bouganvilla but a variant with smaller, tightly bunched leaves -- not sure what it is called. The plant is alive but there has been very sparse flowering on it. Also strangely, it seems that the bud does not bloom completely but stops flowering somewhere between the bud and flower stage. It stays that way for many days and then dries up. As of now I am seeing absolutely no flowering on the plant. I'm not sure what is going on. I have taken every possible care. Fyi last year I did have a fungus gnat (small flying insects) problem. One day I saw scores of them emerging from the bottom of the bouganvilla plant. I had the plant sprayed and since then I don't see the gnats anymore. Can someone help? I would hate to uproot it.

thanks

Hi

Is it bougainvillea glow torch, the one that has compact leaves and the bracts come in the top.Does the plant get full sunlight? How about the fertilizers? I have one of this(glow torch),it bloomed and now has shed all its leaves.I see new growth again.Usually bougainvilla is pest free.I feel,if no bugs are seen and the plant looks healthy(other than not flowering),its not needed to uproot it.Though it is hardy,in this weather,i water them every other day and fertilize every month.

Hi Malini

I've a Few bougainvilea plants, which are very small.  I started with few stems (without leaves), planted in a container, later found that it got life and is slowly picking pace, it has 2 -3, 6" branches showing up. I once read about pruning in GGblog in regards to bougainvillea, my concern is, do it need to cut of the tiny fresh leaves that are growing?? is that wht pruning is?? does this help in making the plant bloossom?? help me

Hi Kris,

I feel ur plant is too small to be pruned. As you say, it has got only 2-3 branches in it. Let it grow and become sturdy. Wait all this summer and if kept in good sunlight(atleast 5-6 hrs),it will for sure give colourful bracts. Let it grow more branches. When the plant has more strong and grown branches,to make it dense and stimulate lateral growths, just prune the long branches or you can pinch the end  of any particular branch,so that more lateral growths are encouraged.

Hope this helps.Good luck with your bougenvilleas.

Hi Kris,

Bougainvillea needs good sunlight and therefore expose the plant to maximum sunlight. As it has many small branches, leave it till it grows, all this summer. Hopefully  it starts to bloom.good luck with great blooms.

regards,

malini
