Hi all,

I have a white hibiscus plant which is more than 2 years old. It was doing well initially but then wilted completely due to pest attack. I thought the plant was dead but then it came up on its own after the rains. I was totally surprised. Now the plant is constantly giving at least 3 flowers a day.

Now what is surprising me is that the plant is now giving pink flowers along with white flowers. Half petals are pink and half are white. This is a complete miracle plant I should say Smile

I am curious to know what makes the plant to give pink flowers. Any ideas?

Hi,

Could be due to two reasons

a) the original white was grafted on pink stock. Now both are growing. Do they have different types of leaves? Can you share photos?

b) Sometimes could also be a sport (a spontaneous mutation).

Anyway, enjoy the flowers.

Thanks

kvs

Thanks Kvs.

I am not sure if it is due to grafting as the pink flower was not there for 2 years. The leaves don't look different at all. I will try to share the pix the next time I get a pink flower.

What ever be the reason, I am completely surprised and happy to have this pink flower Smile

HI Aarthi,

Long long time ago, I had a white hibiscus propagated through stem cutting by me. After a while, one branch alone used to have pink flowers. I think its a sport that you are seeing. Nevertheless its surprising and indeed a miracle.
Just curious, is it a single flower having two different petals or two different colors of flowers show up?
Enjoy!

Hi GG,

From what I hear from you and kvs I think its a sport. I will post a pic of the pinky next time around when she blooms.

The flower has some petals completely white and some completely pink while there are 2 petals which are half white and half pink, clearly separated as if someone drew a line. Nature is so marvelous.

BTW, I am getting a decent harvest of tomatoes and just shared some with my neighbors too. It feels so good when you can pluck few tomatoes from the garden and use it for cooking that day. I am just loving it Smile

cheers,

Aarthi

From your description, it is indeed a marvel. Can't wait to see the picture. Please do post it. In future, if that branch continues to bear similar flowers you can propagate it and start your own variety 😉

Very happy to hear about your tomato harvest and the sharing of the same.Cooking/eating home grown food is very special .A feeling only gardeners can relate to.
