I recently went to the Horticulture society at chennai cathedral road to buy some seeds . The packets were sooo old and  the paper packets looked like that of 80's . i still picked up few vegetable seeds .They were priced Rs 10 per packet . It was even printed MADRAS on the packets , however chennai came in to usage long back .

But the surprise is i got 100% germination from them . i never thought i wld even get 10 % . But the funniest part is the selected namdhari and other costly seed packets i got never gave me even 10 % germination .

So, I think the expiry date doesn't matter to few selected seeds like that of tomatoes and brinjals , chilli etc ...

But , there were not much choices available in the horticulture dept . There were hardly any plants there . Since there are so many enthusiasts now in chennai retorting to gardening as a hobby , we should bring it to their notice somehow , i guess ...

wat say ...

I also heard there is another govt horticulture farm in madhavaram . Anyone visited there ...share ur exp plz ...

LOL about the MADRAS part.good observation. Must have been printed long back but used now for packing. tomatoes, chilly and brinjal can germinate even after 4-5 years. again it depends on how it was stored.

Hello,

The local center of TN Agri University (TNAU) is in Anna Nagar. They conduct roof top gardening training and also have seeds and saplings. I heard that they sell Tavasi Keerai saplings. You may try there.

Regards

Jay

Hello fellowGreens!

I visited Good Governance Guards in Besant nagar taking Usha Soman's advice..they have vegetable seeds at a very reasonable price. Thanks usha. They had seeds for many kinds of brinjal, chillies, palak, peerthingai, karamani, broad beans, bitter gourd, tulasi, radish, ladys finger, drumstick this week.

They also give advice and put up shade nets in your premises in Chennai. Where in Anna nagar is the TNAU outlet, Jay?will be great if you gave us details.

Big Thanku GG for making this site active among us poor chennaiites, who are not as blessed as you Benguluru-ites with wonderful weather.

Where can i get Strawberry seeds in Chennai?? has anyone tried growing them here? I wanted to try them, but I am worried about the hot weather in the coming months. I am also looking for Nannari (sarsaparilla ) and Vettiver(the fragrant one). If anyone has seen these plants anywhere in Chennai please let me know.

Hello,

I have not come across any nurseries selling Strawberry seeds in Chennai. Even capsicum seeds are not sold in most of the nurseries. Chennai's hot weather may not be very ideal to grow strawberries. May be if you try and are successful, please advice us on the processes.

Regards

~Jay

I can vouch for the seeds provided by Usha, though I have not directly approached GGG.
