More pear tomatoes – Updates

Like every gardener, I too visualize a plant flowering and fruiting when I am buying their seeds. It was no different when I bought these yellow pear cherry tomato seeds.

With in no time, I had a whole bunch of pear tomatoes that I cant wait to post their pictures.

MyGarden 509

Well, this one comes with a cherry on top.Actually cherry tomato on top :D

With these kind of sweet tomatoes hanging in your plants, who needs ornamental plants?

They taste sweet but nothing like the red cherry tomato. I rank them 1st.

Right now, I am growing Imperial Black Beauty eggplants and I am eagerly looking forward for them to flower and fruit…

Pear tomatoes – or Garden candy?

This is what I have been waiting for. The amazing transformation. Its like a green signal light going yellow isn’t it?

This pic below was taken as part of my previous post on Yellow pear.

MyGarden 269

This is what the above became in couple of days. The first thing I did was to show my folks and they were speechless looking at this.

For us, the gardening folks this may not be a great thing to see ( though it kinda is). But there is this non-gardening kind. They go crazy looking at this bulb.( Atleast thats what my colleagues at work thought). The skin of the fruit becomes a little transparent yellow.

Look at this “Idea” bulb.

Its me holding that tomato, just to give an idea of the size.

MyGarden 373

Ok.. I can hear ya.. how did it taste?!!

I was expecting a very sweet tasting tomatoes, especially with the bars set so high by my old red cherry tomato plant. It was tasting sour. I am not sure if this is how it tastes. I will check with DoH folks. Also, I took it immediately it changed to yellow. Green->Yellow just took two days. May for the next truss, I will leave it on the plant for a week and taste it.(if they still remain in the plant).

Red, White and Green

No, Its not about a flag or its color. This title is about my latest harvest from the terrace container garden.

I have 3 container with White Brinjal growing in them. By the looks of it, it was very clear why the name eggplant was given to it. But As I gave time to the plant for its fruits to grow, I ended up fruits of the size of an egg.. an ostrich egg…. I actually got 2 batches of the harvest in a weeks gap.

This guy was the biggest of all.

Batch 1:

The “Eggs” were really soft and had an amazing taste.

Batch 2: We have the red, we have the white and there is green ;)

By the way, dont start praising and give credit to the eggplant for bearing a Nokia cellphone. I just threw it in there to make the size of the veggies more sensible. The tomatoes and the chilles are from the garden too.

Tomatos are no less and are competing with the eggplant..

My Visit to Dept of Horticulture and a lil something….

Haa.. What a week. Everyday I come home with a determination to write a post only to dose off.. But not anymore.. I have got so much to tell and any more procrastination will only dilute the content ;) .

In Bangalore, there are few places that come to ones mind when it comes to buying plants/seeds. Atleast from the interaction I had with gardening people in bangalore, I didnt come to know about the Biotechnology centre, Department of Horticulture,Hulimavu. It was one of those google searches that showed me this place.

It was a saturday morning that I decided to find out where this place is. I knew its somewhere nearby my residence but not very sure. Though I had lots of other things planned for the day, I wanted to just checkout the location so that I can come later. So I took my bike and vrooomed.. with some help from the roadside human GPSs i was able to find that spot. I signed in myself at the gate and went in. The road kept going and going with lots of greenhouses, polyhouses and numerous sapota trees on the sides. The very sight of these poly/greenhouses made me so happy. After close to half a kilometers ride, I find a huge campus with a main building.

I entered and introduced myself there and asked about the plants/seed that I wanted to see/buy. The response was a little disappointing, “Wait here someone will come”. So I wait and no one comes(May be I didnt get his joke). Then I go again, same response with more frustration. Anyway, I was determined that I wont leave that facility without getting something. I was grazing at the notice board casually and there were lots papers clipped having seed/plant varieties they have. Suddenly something caught my eye, a cherry tomato variety whose seeds for just Rs 5.00 a gram?… Yes. It is true. This sounded like gold. For a person who has been on the search for cherry tomato seeds, this was the “Aha” moment. Now my grazing look becomes focussed. I read through line by line of those varieties they have and .. Wait a minute I have heard these names.. these names sound like the Heirloom tomato varieties I found in US. I got excited. Then I was told that I should wait for Miss Chandrakala, the person incharge for plant seeds. So I wait, now the wait is little longer, 45 mins. I gave it to them. Its a Govt Office, Its a saturday and I am no farmer with 100s of acres of land waiting for tomato seeds. I am just a 4th floor gardener with some paltry pots. After a long wait, I got to meet her. She was very helpful and friendly. So the first thing I asked for is a gram of all the tomato cultivars. She said, you can order it today and come someother day to get it. “Oh no, I want it right here right now” was my attitude, “I am not going back without something with me”. I said atleast the cherry tomatoes please. She asks “which one” and “1 gram of all kinds” was my answer. The varieties were like this

  • Yellow pear
  • Red pear
  • Washington cherry
  • Broad ripple.

Yellow pear looks like this.yellow pear

One can do a google image search to see how each variety looks.

These seeds are heirloom varieties. To weigh and pack the seeds, I accompanied Chandrakala to the seed storage room where the seeds are kept in a huge bluestar temp controlled environment. After taking all the seed packets of all cherry tomato kinds, I went to billing. The amount was 20 rupees. I paid once, Rs 90 for 1gram of cherry tomato. The difference is huge.

Once the seed purchase is over, I went to the field along with her. The fields were fully with lush green plant. They call it “Green Manure”. Its a special variety that is grown for a period of time and once they matured they are harvested and put back in the soil. I was told that it cuts the fertilizer requirement for the next crop by 50%. Oh, I forgot to mention one important thing, they use only organic methods for production here and not a single chemical is allowed inside. Next I went to vermicompost section, I saw earthworms eating away black slurry and producing black gold. Again a shock, a kg of vermicompost that too of a very good quality was Rs 3.00 and outside it starts from Rs 10 and goes upto 30. Bought a 10kg bag of vermicompost and turned my attention towards BioFertilizer division.

They had the Mycorrhiza packaged in bag and its name is VAM. Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhiza. Also got Tricoderma and P.S.M (Phosphate Solubilizing. Microorganisms ). Let google be your friend here. All of these are for experimentation with my plants.

With all these goodies with me and lots of happiness I left that place with this thought “One searches for happiness around the world and comes home to find it”. This place is just 2-3 kms from my house and has almost everything that I need. I had biked to places that are more then 25kms far just to get some seeds. Hmm….

I am not done yet and so are my tomato plants. Here is the last weeks harvest.MyGarden 199 There were almost 125 tomatoes big and small.

This one is what I have been longing for a while. It looks and tastes so sweet.

Last but not the least. The Egg plant(literally). After seeing this, its not surprising to know why it is named so.

Tomatoes, Potatoes and Beyond….

Today was special.. This morning I harvested those much awaited tomatoes. Yes, the day had come. This is the day I was waiting since the day I sowed the seeds. Though I had done tomatoes earlier, this time was different. There is this much awaited cherry tomato, which bore lots of tomatoes in a single stalk. I always pluck tomatoes when they are green and ripe them indoors.

Apparently there are many who have interests in my tomatoes. The guests include squirrels, pigeons and workers in the building ;) . I dont want them to be tempted. Who wouldn’t be..

Let me stop talking and let the pics do their job..

Its such a pleasure to see tomatoes with their stalk.

This is from an Indeterminate variety- Indam Naveen. My fertilizer regimen was not that very good. Inspite of that, these babies did a great job.

Here is the much awaited cherry tomato. There are more than one stalk here. This is the first batch of tomatoes whcih suffered some serious blossom drop. Once ripe, they will be so sweet not just to eat but to look too.MyGarden 099

There is one tomato (bottom left) in the pic below, with a brown rot. This is a sympton of Calcium deficiency. Its called Blossom End Rot.

Tomatoes after their crowns removed. I will keep them in the rice sack that seems to speeden their ripening process.

I have blogged from the time I sowed the tomato seeds (Oct 12, 2008) till the day I plucked tomatoes(Jan 7, 2009) from it. Its has been a great learning experience. I thank everyone who encouraged/motivated me esp my blog readers who were curiously asking about the progress. I definitely will feel guilty to consume the tomatoes by myself.

I guesstimated the weight of the tomatoes I plucked and turns out its approximately 2kilograms.

Tomato seeds = Rs 50

2kg of tomato = Rs 60 (approx)

But the tomato stalk above = Priceless…….

Did I mention that my long wait for the potatoes saw its end last week. No It was not the right time for picking potatoes, its just that my patience ran out. I am known for my impatience …

This is actually from two plants. The potatoes from the first two plants never get to pose for my camera. ;)

I actually expected more from these plants considering the amount of hardwork i put. But with the very little sunlight we get in the balcony this is not bad. So.. better luck next time.

This time I left my tomato plants to get bushy and didn’t really prune them properly. There are lots of suckers that arise from the plant that result in the nutrition being spread across and not resulting in big friuts. I am planning to raise just two tomato plants of indeterminate plants following a textbook method to see if i can get bigger fruits.

At somepoint in life, everyone should garden and feel for themselves how harvesting from your own plants is like.
