Hi,
I just have a very small balcony space for my garden, but I do try to maximize what I have; I do not have too much sunlight too, but I like to experiment, and have tried my hand at many flowers before I finally had a bit of success.
Any ideas of shade loving flowers which i can add to my garden, and which I can get in chennai are much appreciated.

Really amazed to see so many like minded gardeners. Thanks for the amazing blog GG

Lakshmi,
Wow what a colorful garden.......loved watching the blooms.....are the ixoras in ur collection dwarf variety......becoz they seem to bloom so profusely even as a bush......i was looking out for them....but the nurseries near our place don't have them, so I had to settle with similarly looking Pentas :)......welcome to the world of Gardening....

Mrudula.

@ usha and other members ,
I would like to know what all flowering plants would do well in chennai . If people from chennai can list out the plants they had good success in their garden , we can try new species as well . This can be applicable to veggies as well .
i wld post a list asap of what all i had success with ....
We can also list shade loving plants as well . Even i have too much of shade due to the teak and coconut trees in my backyard . as of now i am growing a lot of ceylon palak in the shades .

Hi Mrudu, Usha and Premlatha,
I have always had success with ixoras in semi shade.. The bouganvilleas, i got them when I went on a trip to yelagiri, just plucked a branch from a roadside bush and came to chennai and planted in a pot.. was not even sure it will root, but it did and now it flowers regularly.
I have a red rose bush, I got it from Manjari nursery in Kotturpuram, they said its called Kashmir rose, this particular variety blooms like crazy, i have it in a very small pot, but it gives out 5 to 6 big flowers at any point. Also have many small pots of mini button roses.
Others I have are Orchids, yellow Alamanda creeper, pasiflora (passion flower), and jasmine. I try to place them in as much sun as they can get, but its pretty much very less direct sun.
Has anybody tried growing hydrangea in chennai? I love the flowers, but am not sure if it does well in chennai climate.

Hi Srikanth,
Thats what i did this weekend, i took soap water and squished them in hand. When i did I noticed that there was a big hole and when i took a closer look, there was a RAT, it digged a hole right inside the root, so i had to balance the plant and add some more soil and water. Now it looks better...phew!!!
