I have a small veggie terrace garden and I grow all different vegetable varieties. In the beginning the potting mix was not economical considering the prices of perlite and coco peat. Thus, I researched a bit to bring my potting mix prices down and I found this nice article online linked below. The article talks about using rice hulls instead of perlite.
Ever since, I have been growing my veggies using rice hulls (15% of the mix) with similar results as perlite. The potting mix turned out economically vibrant too. The near by rice mills sell rice hulls 10 rupees per kg.
I am attaching some pictures of my garden. Sorry for the congested pots around as I have to reduce the size of the garden due to neighbour complains.
