Dear Prakash,
That is so very generous of you ! Will be of tremendous help to all Chennai gardeners on this blog, I am sure. Panchagavyam, in fact has become a very scarce commodity in the city. Restore which used to stock it earlier does not have it any more. Will surely call you sometime. Your green and yellow growbags look very nice. Is that available for sale? If yes, what is the cost?
Could you also please tell us novices more about Jeevamritha?
Thanks again on behalf of us, Chennai gardeners!
Warm regards,
Lakshmi

Hello Prakash,
I have been using plastic (black) bags for growing my plants. These are not of good quality and hence get very weak due to exposure to sunlight. What is the life of these bags? Were you able to reuse them? what is the cost and do they sell in small numbers?
Thanks for your help.

Jay

What medium should we use in these bags (Soil or Coco peat) ?
Also few of my friends say that coco peat should be mixed with perlite for better results.
Cld u pls guide me about the ratio of coco peat & perlite and about the costing & availability of Perlite in Chennai.

Rajagopalan, Perlite is an inert material which looks like crystallized thermacoal.. From nutrients perspective is doesnt contribute to anything as it is inert..However it gives good drainage to the media and can hold nutrients for long..But i strongly believe the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. It might be a good option to use Perlite during seed starting otherwise i will give it a miss.

Succhitra,
1. Is your garden protected from animals. If not all your efforts will go in vain. First protect it.
2. Get growing media. First learn how to grow plants in natural media like a mix of coco peat+fym+red soil in 1:1:2 proportions.
3. Next, learn how to water the plants without damaging and littering your roof. try to go for self watering and drip methods.
4. Get seeds from local market.
5. get seedling trays from local market. they are a bit cheaper. 20 Rs per tray.
6. get growing pots. 3 inch growing pots are only 3 Rs per piece.
7. Get growing bags if you want to grow bitter plants like cucurbits etc. Growing bags are sold in Kgs. Each kg cost your around Rs230.
8. First grow without fertilizers as the soil can supply all the nutrients to the plant. If you want to add fertilizer go for water soluble NPK 19:19:19 and trace elements mix. npk cost your around 150 per Kg and trace mix cost you around 190 per half kg.
happy garden starting.
