Whenever I see a commercial greenhouse or farm, I always get this feeling..”why can’t we grow plants like they do?”. The moment this thought comes in, you start paying attention to details. You try to do everything the right way and see if you can perfect the art.
My goal (more like a wish) right from the beginning is always to reduce the gap between commercial and home gardening in terms of yield. In some cases I was able to come little closer but in some I failed.
In this post, I will write about growing tomatoes in grow bags.…

In hydroponics, the grower takes control of the nutrients supplied to the plants. The nutrients supplied are exactly what the plants need. Unlike conventional agriculture, in hydroponics, we dont put the entire fertilizer when the plants are planted in the field. The nutrients are supplied as and when the plants need. The concentration is weaker so it has be done multiple times a day to keep up with the demands of the plants. In summer the frequency goes higher since water absorption is more in summer. All the substrates used in Hydroponics have excellent air porosity and drainage so rotting does not happen. Rotting happens when the plants drown due to lack of oxygen. If drainage is ensured properly and oxygen supply is not a problem. there will be no rotting.

Great reply GG. Thanks for the detailed write up. Since I am constrained with space currently, I will keep aside hydroponics for now. But will surely try to make my setup on your lines and see the results.
I was a little confused because in the link you posted, of the grow bags with tomatoes growing in them, I saw those juice tetra packs with medium (mostly coco peat i guess in them). I further learned that you were not doing the 100% hydroponics (NFT), I think this was an example of DFT.

hi,
the growbag is filled with an aggregate, cocopeat in my case. This is substrate based hydroponics and is borderline hydroponics. But it is quite forgiving and suits well for our location where power cut is frequent. I have tried NFT/DFT of tomatoes also and they work very well. But more control of nutrients is needed and power supply 24x7 is must.

Hello GG,
Firstly I thank you for coming up with this Urban gardening Idea along with your website, so people starting to get on with understanding basic gardening to todays advance agriculture with Hydroponics. I came across to one of your post with regards to Macro nutrients and weights and I want to ask you does those weights work as you mentioned it works like a charm for you still thought asking you again. Are you still using those salts and is it readily available in India and how are its cost factor
