Hi all,

I have a small garden around my house. We have a very tall coconut tree (maad) in our garden. the problem is with coconut leaves(zawali) and coconuts falling down under the tree, its hard to grow anything else near this tree. I have a limited space in garden and hence was wondering what can i grow near this tree which can  sustain the damage made by falling coconuts and big leaves.

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Harshada

Harshada,

In my hometown in Kerala, we grow pepper vines onto the tree. You just need to make sure the coconut-feller uses a ladder to make sure he doesn't 'maim' the vine when he climbs to put coconuts. You could also try corms like arbi/colocasia and suran/yam.

Good luck

please ask the tree climber to tie the fronds ( leaves) of the tree using a thick 2 - 3 inch dia coconut husk rope( used to draw water from the well) timely cleaning and removing the coconuts will also help.pepper, betel leaves can be grown. ginger lily ( saugandhika in kannada) can also be grown. well it grows in my garden.
