Hello from a cheapo
March 23, 2011 - 8:00 pm

Hi everyone,

I forgot if I have posted in this topic earlier..couldnt find it.

Anyways I am new to gardening.  Staying in my moms house where thanks to a high tension wire above our plot, 50% is not constructed.  Most of it is cemented for parking my car and for my kids playing.  But I still have a 4 feet by 35 feet area where I have planted various seeds and have harvested beans, peas and okhra and few others will be ready in the next month or so.

I call myself a cheapo coz I dont want to spend thousands of rupees to harvest tens or hundreds of rupee worth of vegetabales.  Hence no cocopeat and green houses for me Surprised

Having said that, i also have plenty of cemented area both at ground and first floors.  I bought around 70-80 black nursery covers from chickpet and filled them with red soil..wherein cost of each such 10inch deep cover is around a rupee.  Tried various vegetables and fruits ...which all germinate but dont grow much.  Then I bought some beans from chickpet which i was promised yield 500-1000 a treeLaugh  Maybe he was boasting..but I did sow them and after 2-3 weeks they are a foot in height in these  plastic bags.

Let me if this type of cheapo cultivation works or these plants will end up giving yields of only a small percent of their capacity.  I know peas too can be grown this way. Let me what other plants (veg or fruits) can be grown in such 10inch deep and 4 inch wide nursery plastic covers.Cool

Hi..I refer to entire area near chick pet as chickpet! The place where I bought the black nursery cover is a galli adjoining Avenue road...go to avenue road and ask any plastic bag selling shop and they will guide you.  There are many shops that well but they want minimum committment of 5 kgs or more. There is this one shop on first floor that sells in 1KG quantities costing around 100 bucks I think.

Reg the beans - again technically this cant be called chickpet...it is near this phoren sounding hospital near KR market..Minto hospital or something like that...am new to Blore..so sorry..that whole area is seed selling area..so finding it should not be a problem.

regarding its yield of 500-1000 beans..god knows...I planted them a month back..and they are between a foot and 2 feet now...maybe a month from now they will start yielding...they seem to be of vine variety though.

Hope this helps
