Hi Gg and all fellow gardeners!!

I am Revathi from Gurgaon near Delhi.  I have a long balcony in which I  grow a few flowering plants and herbs, and now have started veggie gardening, thanks to Gg's blogposts and the extensive discussions others have with him.

I have a few tomato plants growing in my garden right now - but they are doing just about alright.  Possibly since there is not enough space as they are in 10 inch pots.  Gg keeps insisting on calcium for tomatoes, but I still haven't found a source for calcium nitrate.  Planted some strawberries but they didn't take off - wonder where I am going wrong.  But no giving up - I am going to get some more strawberry plants this weekend Laugh

Hoping to acquire a green thumb someday or the other.

Revathi

Hello Revathi,

Welcome to the forum. Good to hear that you already have herbs and flowers. There are quite a few folks from around Delhi.

I appreciate your spirit in growing strawberries. You can get Calcium nitrate in fertilizer shops. If not add Gypsum which is calcium sulphate. This is good for soil. Do check with Satish Dayal/ Urban Gardener.

Good luck and looking forward to hear your gardening experiences here.

Hi Revathi,

I guess most of the guys out here have started like yourself. I too am about a couple of months old here and  having a good time in my hydroponic kichen garden.

The results have been amazing uptil now but the efforts are also equal. What herbs have you been growing and the tomatoes and strawberries are they in hydroponics or soil.

Calcium Nitrate is available here in Delhi at Argosy(Chanakyapuri) landline: 011-24107722. Meanwhile you can  also use dried egg shells(crushed) added to the soil for calcium. It has worked for me in the soil based tomato plants.

All the best to you. Do post a few pics of your garden if possible.

Happy Growing!

Hi Revathi:

Very good quality Calcium Nitrate (100% soluble, Spanish origin) is available at the Gift & Garden Shop, DDA Market, Anupam Apartments, IGNOU Road, Saket, New Delhi. Phone:9810880085 (Sudhanshu). The price is Rs.60.oo per Kg. Where do you get the Strawberry plants and do they really do well in Delhi's climate? Regards

Satish

Thanks Gg,  UG and Satish for  the pointers.  I am planning to visit the Chrysanthemum show on Saturday and pick up calcium nitrate from there - there are quite a few stalls selling bulbs and other fertilizers usually.  If I fail to get it there then I will go to Saket or Chanakyapuri as suggested by you.

Is Calcium nitrate water soluble? How much should I apply and how frequently - as a basal feed or foliar feed?  2 of my plants have set buds and one has a few toms on 1 plant - but they do not seem to grow in size or ripen.  Meanwhile I will add crushed egg shells too.

UG, all my plants are in soil

Satish, I got my strawberry (which are no longer alive) from Balaji Beej Bhandar in Kapashera.  I seem to have picked up the art of killing plants very well Cry  But 2 of my friends grew strawberry last year and were raving about the taste.  That proves that they do well  in Delhi winters.  Heard  Rajdhani nursery also sells them.

Hi UG

Your setup is awesome.  The toms and strawberries are looking quite healthy.  Looks like you are a lucky gardener who is successful right from the beginning.

I have planted 3 strawberry plants again.  Let me see if I am successful in growing them this time.

I have oregano, stevia and ajwain plants growing in pots.

Can you tell me how much calcium nitrate is to be applied to the tomatoes and how often does one repeat it?

Thanks and Regards

Revathi
