Hello All,

I have some beetroots that have sprouted shoots and leaves. Can I plant them and expect a decent crop?

I figured it out. It will just produce the leaves and later seeds but no beets.

Yes, it is the same case with Onion, Radish , Carrot. They produce seed in two seasons. First they grow their tuber/stem. Then in the 2nd season they produce the seeds.

So if you want seeds, plant an onion .. and if you want onion plant a seed :).

But Srikanth, beetroot is the same family as that of Spinach so the leaves can be consumed as well. Till the seed stalk comes out, you can harvest the leaves.. ?

I have never tasted the beetroot leaves. I just had Indian curry made of Bok Choy (http://pickyeaterblog.com/indi.....-bok-choy/) last night. It tasted pretty good except for some dry skins (the kind that you get if you do not remove the top few layers of onion). May be I should have harvested when it was 30 - 35 days old.

Do the beetroot leaves taste as good as the good old Spinach? If so, I would love to grow them.

Hi Srikhant,

I am cooking beetroot leaves. It is tastier than spinach because the stem is crunchy. I am making stir fry with onion coconut and green chili(Thoran in Malayalam).

Thanks for giving idea of planting beetroot sprout. Usually I sow seeds.

Regards

Sheena
