A slice of Beefsteak

Well, Not really!. Its a slice of Beefsteak Tomato I am taking about. Last few posts were about the tomato cultivar called “Marmande”. Though I posted pictures, I never tried tasting them. Early this week, I decided to.

Only after I took a slice of the tomato, I realized how apt the name beefsteak is..

Taste: It was sweet, flavorful and meaty. Its the best of all the tomatoes I have ever tasted.

BTW, this week, I had to save my plants from falling off due to weight, hence I decided to harvest the 2nd batch of Tomatoes from the greenhouse..  Total weight approx 2kg.

The biggest one was a 300gm tomato. The heaviest ever in my garden.

Cabbage harvest

This is the day I have been waiting for since  I bought the seeds of Earliana – an early yielding variety of cabbage. I wrote about it here and here. This morning I decided to pluck it. Reason?.. Its almost 2 months from the date of transplanting, i ran out of patience and I saw some cracking on one of the cabbages.

Ok now for some details.

Totally I had 3 pots with cabbage. Of which 2 of them were in good sunlight for few initial days and one of them was in part shade ( due to space constraints). Later, all the 3 of them came to my balcony where they get less than 2-3 hours sunlight.

This is how they looked day before yesterday.

Oh wait a minute..Am I in a race?

MyGarden 818

If you notice the 2nd pic carefully, the cracks and the splits are observed. Yes that cabbage started cracking.  Why? It could be one of the following reasons.

  • The cabbages are mature but not harvested on time. Early maturing varieties are prone to cracking quickly.
  • Over watering – Especially when the head is mature. Causing the inner leaves to grow more faster than the outer mature leaves of the head. Thus causing it to break.
  • Over fertilizing – Causing the new shoot to grow faster than the outer leaves resulting in cracking.

I don’t know which one, but yeah the cabbage cracked!. So what to do in this situation. a) Just harvest it and eat!. or b) do the freakiest thing. Just lift the cabbage plant with the plant from the pot and put it back in after turning it half turn. This is what is recommended by many sources in the internet and it makes sense because doing so cuts many roots which checks the intake of water and hence slowing down the growth of the new shoot. you can also randomly cut out some roots if you know what you are doing. How is that for a learning!?

Lessons learnt:

Cabbage cracking and how to prevent/correct it.

Full sunlight is very important for cabbage’s growth.( I mean..Isn’t that obvious)?

I am now brave enough to try it one more time and get much better yields.

Oh, I forgot to mention how much they weighed.

The winner cabbage( i.e the first pic) weighed 580gms and the 2nd runner weighed 470 gms.

We cooked the 500+gms one and it was sweet and tasty.!

More pear tomatoes – Updates

Like every gardener, I too visualize a plant flowering and fruiting when I am buying their seeds. It was no different when I bought these yellow pear cherry tomato seeds.

With in no time, I had a whole bunch of pear tomatoes that I cant wait to post their pictures.

MyGarden 509

Well, this one comes with a cherry on top.Actually cherry tomato on top :D

MyGarden 514MyGarden 511

With these kind of sweet tomatoes hanging in your plants, who needs ornamental plants?

They taste sweet but nothing like the red cherry tomato. I rank them 1st.

Right now, I am growing Imperial Black Beauty eggplants and I am eagerly looking forward for them to flower and fruit…

Its pouring capsicums

Its a problem of plenty. It always happens when the plants in your garden compete with each other and yield their branch off….

Well, this time it was capsicum. Remember my old post on Capsicums. When I planted them I was little sceptical. Not only they were in my balcony with very limited sunlight, they were also planted in a smaller container than what they actually require. Being such sweet plants they are, they were very forgiving and made me proud. What is a better way to thank them than blogging about them. Thank you buddies… :-)

Is the hand big or the pepper small ;)

MyGarden 348

When I plucked all these beauties and walked my way to the kitchen, my wife got so excited about the peppers and picked just one of them. And told me….

Her: “See there is Ganeshji in our pepper”.

Me: What?

Her: It is ganeshji .See carefully..

Lord Ganesh is her favorite. And that pepper is ….

MyGarden 357Ganesha

It indeed looks a little like Ganesha. There is no arguing here…. ;-)

Tomatoes, Potatoes and Beyond….

Today was special.. This morning I harvested those much awaited tomatoes. Yes, the day had come. This is the day I was waiting since the day I sowed the seeds. Though I had done tomatoes earlier, this time was different. There is this much awaited cherry tomato, which bore lots of tomatoes in a single stalk. I always pluck tomatoes when they are green and ripe them indoors.

Apparently there are many who have interests in my tomatoes. The guests include squirrels, pigeons and workers in the building ;) . I dont want them to be tempted. Who wouldn’t be..

Let me stop talking and let the pics do their job..

Its such a pleasure to see tomatoes with their stalk.

This is from an Indeterminate variety- Indam Naveen. My fertilizer regimen was not that very good. Inspite of that, these babies did a great job.

Here is the much awaited cherry tomato. There are more than one stalk here. This is the first batch of tomatoes whcih suffered some serious blossom drop. Once ripe, they will be so sweet not just to eat but to look too.MyGarden 099

There is one tomato (bottom left) in the pic below, with a brown rot. This is a sympton of Calcium deficiency. Its called Blossom End Rot.

Tomatoes after their crowns removed. I will keep them in the rice sack that seems to speeden their ripening process.

I have blogged from the time I sowed the tomato seeds (Oct 12, 2008) till the day I plucked tomatoes(Jan 7, 2009) from it. Its has been a great learning experience. I thank everyone who encouraged/motivated me esp my blog readers who were curiously asking about the progress. I definitely will feel guilty to consume the tomatoes by myself.

MyGarden 105

I guesstimated the weight of the tomatoes I plucked and turns out its approximately 2kilograms.

Tomato seeds = Rs 50

2kg of tomato = Rs 60 (approx)

But the tomato stalk above = Priceless…….

Did I mention that my long wait for the potatoes saw its end last week. No It was not the right time for picking potatoes, its just that my patience ran out. I am known for my impatience …

MyGarden 084

This is actually from two plants. The potatoes from the first two plants never get to pose for my camera. ;)

I actually expected more from these plants considering the amount of hardwork i put. But with the very little sunlight we get in the balcony this is not bad. So.. better luck next time.

This time I left my tomato plants to get bushy and didn’t really prune them properly. There are lots of suckers that arise from the plant that result in the nutrition being spread across and not resulting in big friuts. I am planning to raise just two tomato plants of indeterminate plants following a textbook method to see if i can get bigger fruits.

At somepoint in life, everyone should garden and feel for themselves how harvesting from your own plants is like.

Seed Starting Updates

Its been a month since I sowed tomatoes, chillies and egg plants. I check their progress daily and they are on a growing spree. They are now waiting to be transplanted into bigger pots. Hmm.. thats where the catch is. How big is bigger.

Many websites and university extensions mention that a 5 gallon bucket is the best for tomatoes. Also they dont recommend indeterminate variety in containers( which is what I exactly did ;) . So I went ahead and purchased old paint buckets of 20 Litre capacity from a painter.

Each of them needs a whopping 10Kg bag of potting soil. I have a limited supply of soil with me, but I definitely didnt think I will have 100% germination rate for tomatoes, requiring lots of soil. So this weekend I am planning to get potting soil ( basically compost+cocopeat+red/loamy soil).

Here is a 1 month old tomato seedling

And this is the whole bush. They are little leaning on the sides due to phototropism.

And I have harvested the two batches of spinach.

And the next batch of spinach is on its way.

I am growing spinach in my balcony and it is responding very well to the limited sunlight that they get. Anyone who wants to try out veggie gardening should start with spinach.

My next post is on Potatoes….
